Ask about the mix, not just the price
The best first question: what mortar will you use on my brick, and why? A good mason talks about matching mix to brick age. A bad sign is one mix for all jobs. Hard mortar on old soft brick ruins it.
Four more questions that count
How deep do you cut the joints? Good work takes worn mortar out to real depth. A thin skim fails fast.
May I see past work? New joints should look even and blend with old. Drive by a past job if you can.
Is the price in writing? It should list walls, scope, and what is in the job. Spoken quotes drift.
How do you guard my place? Masking, dust care, daily sweep, and plant guards should be in the plan.
Watch out for the fast quote
A price given by phone, sight unseen, is a guess. Mortar must be tested in person. Its hardness, depth of wear, and brick type all count. A bid made without touching the wall is not real.
